Part N Categories

Sorting your expenses into the right Part N categories isn’t always easy. The best place to start is with the automatic categorisation tool, PartN.com.au. It will connect to your online banking (or your uploaded PDF bank statements) and automatically categorise your transactions for you, based on the vendor. This can save you hours of tedious work, and a small fortune in legal fees. But there will still be transactions that cannot be categorised automatically, such as direct bank transfers.

Take a look at our guide below to see what should and should not be included in each category. Just remember that this is a general guide, and is not a substitute for legal advice.

📺 Repairs - furnishings and appliances

When the Financial Statement was first created in the 1970s, it was economical to repair things when they broke. These days, the call out fees alone are typically higher than the cost of a replacement item, so it is common to include new furniture and appliances in this category, as well as repairs to existing furniture and appliances. An unavoidable aspect of 21st century living is that something’s always breaking!

Include:
  • Furniture
  • Appliances such as fridges, televisions, kettles, toasters, and so on
  • Furniture repair and upholstering
  • Appliance repair and servicing

🎁 Gifts

Gifts can be a tricky category, because anything can be a gift if you wrap it in paper! Some shops, such as florists, predominantly cater to gift givers, but usually it’s the intention that counts, not the vendor.

Include:
  • Flowers
  • Christmas presents
  • Birthday presents
  • Presents for colleagues
  • Presents for children’s parties
  • Greeting cards
Do not include:
  • Treats or indulgences for yourself

PartN.Com.au:

If you want to be precise, you can mark specific transactions as being gifts. You can even split a single transaction between gifts and other categories. Some people, however, prefer to categorise things according to their underlying nature (such as ‘books’, ‘clothing’, ‘gardening supplies’, etc) and then do a final adjustment by hand to pull some of that expenditure into the Gifts category.
